When you think whey protein, the first that pops into your head is probably working out. Whey protein isolate’s claim to fame is its muscle building properties, but the benefits do not stop there. There are other additional benefits to whey protein isolate, but the quality of the protein becomes a big factor.

Protein, Amino acids and Immunity

We are about to get a little science-y so hang onto your hats! Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Think of them like individual blocks that you use to build a castle (or house or racecar). Your body uses amino acids to build critical parts of every single cell in your body. This includes your immune cells. So where do amino acids come from? The protein you eat in your diet.

Why whey protein isolate?

Whey protein isolate is considered to be a “complete” protein, which means it contains all the amino acids. Research suggests that consuming enough protein, whey protein in particular, can help strengthen the immune system and fend off illnesses but the quality of the whey protein is important. Not all whey protein isolates are created equal.

Quality matters!

Whey protein supplements that are created using a process called “cold press” or “microfiltration” are far superior at supporting the immune system than other whey protein supplements. This is because the whey protein itself contains fully formed immune system supporting cells called immunoglobulins. If the whey protein is made using heat (many of them are), these immunoglobulins are broken down. You still get the benefit of the amino acids, but not the added support to your immune system. Generally, whey protein that is cold pressed will say it on the label or use terms like “undenatured whey”, “native whey”, or “microfiltered”.   If in doubt, contact the supplier and ask, it is well worth the added benefit.
